Prague underground tours: Old Town Hall and medieval cellars
The ground level of the Old Town has risen over the centuries. In the 13th century the ground was raised, a change linked to flood protection. Former ground floors became cellars. Under the Old Town Hall you can still see Romanesque and Gothic remains of the old buildings.
You see them on a guided route. The basic ticket does not include a free walk through the cellars. The route is hall tour A, which also takes in the chapel and the state rooms, or hall tour B, which covers the basement alone.

Our picks: the medieval underground
Our take: the history tour is the classic visit to the cellars. The guided tour adds the Town Hall underground, and the ghost version tells the legends.

Three kinds of underground visit
They differ in entrance, route and ticket. They are not interchangeable.
| Visit | What you see | Cost (2026) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hall route B | The Romanesque and Gothic basement of the Old Town Hall | CZK 100 per person plus the basic ticket | History and architecture |
| Hall route A | Chapel, state rooms and the same basement | CZK 150 per person plus the basic ticket | One visit that covers the whole building |
| Old Town cellar walk | Cellars and corridors elsewhere in the Old Town, plus a dungeon exhibition | Set by the company | A walk with stories |
| Legend walk | Old Town and Jewish Quarter by lantern, with ghost stories | Set by the company | An evening out |
For most visitors who want real medieval masonry, hall route B is the straightforward choice. It costs an adult CZK 450 in total at the desk, without the lift. Choose the cellar walk if you want a guide who tells stories on the street.
What is, and is not, down there
The underground is smaller than the popular stories suggest.
Below the Old Town Hall
The basement keeps earlier ground floors of the Old Town. The remains are Romanesque and Gothic. You walk through them with a guide and not on your own.
The Old Town cellar route
This walk passes rooms, cellars and corridors dated to the 12th to the 14th century, some up to two floors below street level. They are separate spaces, not one connected network under the city.
The dungeon scenes
Props, costumes and dungeon rooms in the walks are staging. Enjoy them as theatre. Do not read them as proof of medieval use.
The building above
The Old Town Hall was founded in 1338. The tower followed in 1364 and the oriel chapel in 1381. These dates belong to the hall and not to the clock, which is dated to 1410. Heavy damage in May 1945 hit the hall above ground, and the clock was running again in 1948.
Full history βAccess
The historic interiors of the hall are not barrier-free. Ask the operator about your own needs before you book.
Plan the visit
Pair the cellars with the clock and the tower.
Booking the hall routes
The interior fee is sold on the day of your visit, on site. Organised groups must reserve ahead. Routes run on fixed dates, so check the timetable for your day. Each departure has its own language.
All tours compared βTiming around the apostles
The apostles appear on the hour from 08:00 to 23:00. The hall closes earlier than the last show, so do not plan a cellar route around the late hours.
Show times βCombine it with the tower
The basic ticket covers the tower and the Knights' Hall, where an interactive digital model explains the clock. A cellar route is an add-on to that ticket, so book the tower on the same visit. Lift access to the gallery costs extra.
Tower hours and view βTickets
An adult pays CZK 350 at the desk for the basic ticket or CZK 450 online with skip-the-line. The online version is valid for the tower only.

Prague underground: frequently asked questions
Can I walk through the cellars on my own?
No. The Romanesque and Gothic basement of the Old Town Hall is part of a guided route. The tower ticket does not include free access to it.
Is there a tunnel network under the Old Town?
Individual cellars and passages are visited on guided routes. Do not expect to explore a connected system under the whole district on your own.
What is the difference between route A and route B?
Route A adds the chapel and the state rooms to the basement. Route B covers the basement only and costs CZK 100 instead of CZK 150 per person.
Is the underground tour suitable for children?
Visitors under 15 enter with an adult. The rooms are not barrier-free, so ask the operator about your children's ages and any other needs.
Is the Old Town cellar walk the same as the hall's basement?
No. It is a separate product from another operator, with its own route, meeting point and ticket. Check the current timetable and price for your date.
Is this the official website of the Old Town Hall?
No. This is an independent guide. It is not the official website of the city or of the Old Town Hall, and it is not connected to any tour company.
